7 things you can do to have great sex during menopause

Ugh, sex. It’s often the last thing on your mind when you’re going through menopause. With symptoms like vaginal dryness, hot flushes, and fluctuating hormones, it’s hardly surprising if you’re not up for it. But menopause doesn't need to signal the end of a satisfying sexual relationship. In fact, many women emerge from the initial I-Don’t-Want-Sex-Ever-Again slump to discover a renewed feeling of sexual energy. Here’s how you can enjoy a fulfilling sex life in your fifties and beyond.

1. Talk openly with your partner

It’s time to have a serious chat. How is menopause effecting your body and sex drive? Help your partner understand what you’re going through by having a frank conversation about your needs and how your body responds to sex.

Be honest and open. Also ask your partner for support.

The symptoms of menopause vary for each woman, but may include hot flushes, night sweats and weight gain. These things may not put you in the mood for sex. Involve your partner in discussions about how you can manage your symptoms, from cooling down the room to considering menopausal hormone therapy (MHT).

2. Embrace menopause as part of your life journey

Menopause is an inevitable part of life for all women. Find empowerment by accepting menopause as not the end of your femininity, but part of your experience as a woman. Many women see menopause as an opportunity for personal growth. A positive attitude will help you feel more confident and sexy.

3. Create intimacy in your relationship

It might be time to bring back some old fashioned romance. Think candles, holding hands, and foot massages. There are many ways to be intimate without having sex. Maintain closeness and attraction with your partner by touching, cuddling – and even, talking.

4. Manage vaginal dryness

Yes, vaginal dryness can be a very real problem for a lot of women – but there are ways to manage it.

Lubricants, vaginal moisturisers, vaginal estrogen therapy or menopausal hormone therapy can all help in different ways.

5. Make the effort to have sex

When your libido is low, you may choose to have 'decision-driven' sex rather than 'desire-driven' sex. This might mean sex is planned and deliberate, rather than spontaneous. You might find you ‘get in the mood’ once you get started.

6. Experiment

Don’t be shy. Try out some new and different ways to find sexual gratification. Include activities that don’t involve vaginal penetration, such as oral sex, sexual aids and mutual masturbation. Physical changes may slow your reaction times, so plan for slow, lingering sessions of lovemaking.

7. Look after yourself

When you have a busy life, it’s easy to put yourself last. Make self-care a priority.

Healthy eating, exercise and relaxation should be part of your daily life.
